Pancreatic Surgeries
The pancreas is an important organ located in the abdomen. It performs two important functions: –
- Exocrine function that deals with digestion
- Endocrine function that helps in controlling the blood sugar
level.
Some of the factors which lead to the development of pancreatic
disorder are gallstones, alcoholism, certain medications, high levels
of triglyceride in the blood, abdominal surgery and hypercalcemia.
Some Signs & Symptoms of pancreatic problems include: –
Upper abdominal pain, fever, nausea, tenderness in the pancreatic
region, and abdominal pain that radiates to the back.

Some of the common pancreatic disorders are: –
- Acute pancreatitis,
- Chronic pancreatitis,
- Psuedocyst pancreas,
- Pancreatic cancers and Hereditary pancreatitis.
Acute pancreatitis is diagnosed with the help of the elevation of
amylase and lipase enzymes. Along with this, white blood cells,
blood sugar, kidney function test, and liver function test are done to
rule out other conditions.
Various Treatment for pancreatic disorders includes: –
- Surgery, anti-inflammatory medication, endoscopic procedures and
antibiotic medications. - Surgical procedure for pancreatic psuedocyst is laparoscopic/ open
cystogastrostomy. For necrotic infective pancreas step approach is
being followed. - Surgical procedures for pancreatic cancer include the Whipple
procedure which is the removal of the head of the pancreas,
duodenum, gallbladder, and bile duct.
Post-operative steps:
- Take complete rest for at least a week so that you would heal both physically and mentally.
- Take nutritional supplements, if required, after the suggestion of your doctor.
- Follow the medications regularly as it would help in quick recovery.
- Avoid smoking and alcohol.
- Avoid fatty, sugar and salt-rich foods.
